Total liabilities & shareholders’ equity represent the total financing of a company’s assets. It shows where the money comes from—either borrowed (liabilities) or owned by shareholders (equity). This total must always equal the company’s total assets, forming the foundation of the accounting equation:

This line on the balance sheet confirms that a company’s resources are fully funded by either debt or equity.
